2017 Christmas Home Tour

Happy One Week from Christmas!!  I guess it’s about time I shared my home all decked out for the holiday.  It’s been a slow process to get decorated this year.  That whole having another baby thing really slows down how much I can get done on a daily basis.

I’ve come to realize that my go to Christmas decor is all red and green.  I’m perfectly happy with that since I know it will never go out of style.  Most of the Christmas decor is centralized on our main level in the living room, dining room, and kitchen.

We decided to get a real Christmas tree this year, and I’m still a little on the fence about it.  It does smell nice, but not as much as I thought it would.  Plus, the whole remembering to water it thing and all the needles falling off, it’s kind of high maintenance.  I also don’t love how if there is a “bald” spot you can’t just move a branch to fill it.

Either way, it’s worked out because we put up our artificial Christmas tree in our newly finished basement!  So the fresh tree gets to take center stage in our living room.

I also added a live, fresh garland around the doors leading to our patio in the dining room.  I love how economical they are.  You get like 30 feet of garland for not very much.  It was so long that I was able to cut a portion of it off to use on the mantle.  I just wish they looked more fresh longer than a few days.

Christmas home decor, Christmas home tour, red and green Christmas, Christmas decorationsI had to share this picture, because it includes my biggest, literally, Christmas tree decorating tip.  Every year, when decorating the tree I tend to get rid of smaller ornaments and add in bigger ones.  The best way to make your tree look grand and beautiful is using the biggest ornaments you can find.  These snowflake ones are huge and make the tree look great.

Now moving onto the dining room.  You’ve already seen most of it in this Christmas dinner tablescape post.

I truly hope you have a blessed Christmas season with friends and family.  I appreciate all of your support and readership over the last year.  I’m looking forward to what the new year brings.  First, I’m going to enjoy some down time with my family and praise that Jesus was born here on Earth to show us the way and the light.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Home Update: The Master Bedroom

Thanks for all the love on the Halloween Boo Basket ideas earlier this week.  It’s such a fun thing to do throughout your neighborhood this time of year.  Today, I’m showing you a long overdue home update.  Specifically the changes that have happened in our Master Bedroom.  You can see what the room looked like when we first moved in about a year and a half ago here.  And what it looked like a month after moving in here.

Wow, that was fun to reminise and see what everything use to look like.  Going back through those posts also made me realize I owe you guys a bunch of updates!  I’ll get to work on those.  First up though is our Master Bedroom.

We’ve definitely used a lot of what we already had to complete this room.  Our furniture and most of the wall decor was used in our previous house and just repurposed here.  However, we have added several new fun things to make it our own.

Here’s what this part of the room looked like before.

And here it is now.

Not a lot different but we’ve gotten things up on the walls.  You know how rooms are never really done?  Well I’d love to get some more substantial lamps for our nightstands.  Or ideally, I’d like to get two small dressers to use as nightstands.  The current nightstands will move to the guest room whenever we get those dressers.  I’m wanting a more collected look and less matchy matchy.

Across from the foot of the bed is this side of the room before.

And now here is how it looks.

I feel like a grown up because we have curtains, haha!  Isn’t it funny the things that make us feel like adults or like we have our lives together? I have a friend that says if her car is clean she feels like her life is on track.

The curtains are from Ikea, because they are the only reasonable place to get super long curtains that aren’t a million dollars.  I love our tall ceilings, but our windows are so high that I have to get 100″ or more curtains to cover them.

I’ve also realized that I kind of hate the window placements in our house. Don’t get me wrong I love how many we have and all of the natural light.  However, the design of having all of our windows in the corner of the room makes curtain hanging difficult.

Now here is the other side of the room with the biggest update of all!

Another project completed while my Father-in-Law was here, was this massive barn door.  Our house was built without a door from the bedroom to the master bathroom, and while I can sleep through my husband showering in the morning, it’s not ideal.  Plus, the door is such a statement piece, not just functional.

I’m so impressed with how it turned out! They followed this tutorial and adjusted quite a few things based on the size and orientation of our doorway.  We purchased all of the hardware to hang the door and the handles at Home Depot.  Surprisingly, the door track hardware wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be.

What’s your favorite part?  I hope you have a great weekend, and I’m excited to see you back here next week.  I had a real photographer come to my house to take pictures for the posts next week!  They turned out so good, I can’t wait for you to see them!

Fall Front Porch 2017

Last week I showed you the inside of my home all cozied up for fall, and today I’m going to show you my fall front porch.  You can see the last two years here and here.  Welcome, walk on up to our front porch!

Fall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchWhen I took these photos it was a beautiful fall day with perfect weather.  We’ve since had a quick snow with a few inches and now all of our plants are much more droopy than they were before.

Fall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchFall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchI was really wanting to add some tall corn stalks in the little corner by the window.  However, after searching at least four stores and coming up empty, I let go of that idea.  I do think they would look really fun though.

Fall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchI have a pretty standard formula when it comes to decorating my front porch for fall.  It’s simple….

Pumpkin + Mum + Something Extra = Perfect Fall Front Porch Vignette

This year I used my recent anniversary gift and filled that bronze bucket with a bunch of small pumpkins and gourds.  It’s my something extra this year.  I also love that it lets you know who lives at our house, with our name on the bucket.

Fall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchHere my something extra is this outdoor lantern.  There are so many fall things you can use to add a little something fun to your front porch.  Try using typical things like hay bales, corn stalks, or dried corn.  If you want to be a little bit more original, look around your house for things that are a little different.  Use buckets, baskets, rustic boxes, old shutters, metal tubs, signage, or crates to mix it up.

Fall front porch decorating ideas, fall front porch decor, how to decorate for fall on your porchThis year I feel like my decorating is so much less planned out or thoughtful.  I think we’re just in a season of life, where other things are taking priority.  I totally underestimated how much more time it would take to care for a newborn and a toddler.  It also feels so good to let go of everything and just enjoy snuggling a baby.  I’ve definitely been trying to give myself more grace on those days where it feels like I should just hold the sleeping baby on my chest.  I mean as everyone always says, the days are long, but the years are short.  It’s totally ok to have a less decorated front porch (and other areas of the house) when you’re soaking up a new baby and trying to make memories to fill the short 18 years we get with our kiddos.

Anyway, moving on from my deep parental thoughts this morning.  I hope you were inspired to put to use a simple formula for a Fall front porch.  What do you plan to use as your “something extra” in your decorating?

A Cozy Fall Home Tour

This Fall is a little different around our house. We have an additional child, our basement is being completed, we have a lot of travel planned, and not many free weekends.  Because of those things, I haven’t done as much seasonal decorating.  Mostly, all of our things are piled up in the corner of our basement while it’s getting completed.  It’s going to be so good, I can’t wait for you all to see it!

I focused on a few areas and tried to just make everything cozy, while adding texture and fall colors.  I’d love to switch out my living room pillows since they are summery blues and yellows.  However, the more fall-like pillows are under a massive pile of boxes and sawdust in the basement.

I’ll leave you to look through our living and dining rooms all cozied and warmed up for fall.

The dining room is really lacking in decor.  I was able to add a few fall wine colored napkins and make a table setting using gold painted twigs.  I plan to add some cinnamon scented pine cones and candles eventually.  You know when the basement is accessible.

How do you decorate for fall? Are natural elements from outside like twigs and leaves part of your decor?  Do you add cozy blankets and pillows?  Do you put pumpkins everywhere? What colors do you gravitate towards?

Happy Fall Y’all!

How to Create an Organized Garage Mudroom

The simplest answer to the title question of this post is to have a baby.  Specifically have a baby with a husband who can’t sit still for too long. Within the two weeks after having our new baby three major house projects got completed.  Whohoo!  I’m going to show you how we created more space and storage in our garage by making a garage mudroom.

The first thing that was done, thanks to my husband and Father-in-law, was putting up hanging storage shelves above the garage door.  These allowed us to get a lot of things off the floor and make room for a new mud room area.

Once things were a little more cleared out, work got started on the garage mudroom area.  I used a variety of inspiration pictures from Pinterest to create a seating area, shoe storage, and a place to quickly put coats. Another main reason for our garage mudroom, especially since we have one inside also, is to keep the winter nastiness outside.  I don’t want wet snow, dirty snow, or frozen snow in my house.

Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroomWe used some adjustable shelves for shoe storage.  The best part is that we can move the shelves to fit whatever types of shoes we’re wearing for the season.Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroomThe bench is completely custom with my husband and Father-in-law practically making a puzzle to fill in the awkward space next to the stairs.  It’s great to have a place to sit down to be able to put shoes and boots on and off.  The cubbies underneath give us a space to put those random things that collect in places like this.  I also plan to put a boot tray in the larger cubby to contain that winter nastiness I talked about before.  A cozy rug dresses up the space as well.

Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroomI think my favorite part of the garage mudroom are the hooks.  I love how the black, chunky hooks pop off the white wall.  Surprisingly we found the hooks at Home Depot.  We were able to use some leftover wood and added the hooks onto them.  They are at the perfect height to throw your coat over as you’re going up the stairs into the house.

Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroom

Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroomThere are still a few things I may add to the garage mudroom to dress it up and make it cozier.  I’m thinking a pillow or two might make the bench even better.  Is it weird to have throw pillows in your garage?  I need to get that boot tray and figure out exactly what is going in the bins under the bench.  Labeling those bins will make it much more likely that they’ll be used appropriately.

This project also spurred the repainting of all the concrete skirting in the garage and the stairs into the house.  It looks so much cleaner and crisper now.  Plus, I won’t have to worry about the dark colored stairs looking dirty.  Now to figure out what color to paint the door.  I want something dark that will help to camouflage dirt, but black isn’t going to work with the stair color.  Maybe a fun color like a dark teal?

Garage mudroom ideas, garage organization ideas, garage mudroom diy, garage storage, garage storage ideas, garage mudroomI’m so grateful that the project got done and I’m anxious to see how we put it to use this winter.  Three cheers for my husband and Father-in-law working so hard to get it done while I was in baby-ville.  Stay tuned because the other project they completed will be in an updated room tour of our Master bedroom.  It’s a good one, so you don’t want to miss that.
