It’s Week 5 of the One Room Challenge which means we are in the final stretches and probably have a lot to get done before the big reveal next week.  Here’s hoping I can push through to the finish.  If you’ve missed any of the previous weeks, see Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4 by clicking on the links.  This week I wanted to show you the progress we’ve made at my desk area.  My husband had no fun at all getting the shelves hung up but then I had all kinds of fun doing the shelf styling!

Shelf StylingI love that they really define my office space because most days there are just toys strewn about everywhere.  The shelves also give me a great spot to store and display a lot of things.  Don’t you love that little peak of the pillow you’re getting?

Shelf StylingThe shelves are from Ikea and screw right into the wall using the brackets on the end of each shelf.  We had to use drywall anchors in order to ensure they were sturdy and would allow for a little bit of weight.

Shelf StylingI love using books as decor and all of my party planning, recipe, drink, and wedding inspiration books are perfect in my office.  It doesn’t hurt that they also match the color scheme!  I’ve received several gifts in these cute little boxes and they make for perfect camouflaged storage.

Shelf StylingI love having all of my most used notebooks, journals, and calendars right within reach.  I use to have them all over the place and remembering where they were when I need to jot something down was super frustrating.  I also used two cute little bowls to hold my small collection of washi tape because I use those pretty frequently also, and they are cute to display.  I love washi tape because of it’s ability to be transferred so easily.  I’ve used the same two pieces to hold up my menu in the kitchen for weeks.  They just peal off one paper and stick right onto another.  Don’t be afraid to use things from other parts of your house for shelf styling.  Those bowls were in my kitchen, but their gold trimmed edges were screaming to be a part of my shared office and playroom.  Shelf StylingI also like to add a little life when shelf styling with plants or flowers.  A metal tin of (fake) succulents adds that desperately needed greenery to the shelves and my office.  That tin has moved around our house so many times, it’s just perfect everywhere.  I think I’ll eventually add a real plant because the shelves get great sunlight most of the day. Adding a candle is also a great idea in the work space, I’d recommend picking a smell that energizes you and helps you be productive in your work space.

Shelf StylingWell, that rounds out Week 5 of the One Room Challenge, and yet there is still so much to be done.  I keep adding things to my list but I’m steadily making progress and know that even if I don’t completely finish the room by next week, it’s come a long way in a short period.  Plus at the end of the day, the room is here to serve us and allow my daughter and I to work and play in the same space, that’s all that really matters.  Be sure to check out all of the featured designers here, and all of the guest participants at Calling It Home on Thursday.
