I don’t personally think of pink and purple as Christmas colors, but they do symbolize the advent season. As a Catholic, these advent colors are everywhere at church throughout December. I also wanted to have an advent wreath at home and bring some of those hope, faith, joy, and peace vibes around my dining table.
Last year I found really awesome tall gold candle holders at Target as part of the Threshold line (similar ones here). Well, like much of our stuff, they didn’t make it to England during our move (p.s. never use National Van Lines to move internationally).
So I bought new similar ones from Amazon. And I may just like them better. I used the candle holders in a circle with the purple and pink advent candles. But those colors severely clashed with my red poinsettia napkin ring holders.
As with most things, I went to Pinterest to search for ways to include the advent colors in my tablescape. I found a great inspiration picture that was the jumping off point of my tablescape.
How To Build A Centerpiece with Advent Colors
After being inspired on Pinterest I first thought of things I already own that are pink and purple. Thankfully, I had a great blush colored linen table runner I could use. That combined with my gold candle holders and chargers meant I only had to incorporate a few more purple things.
My inspiration picture used a navy blue table cloth that kind of grounded the whole tablescape. I didn’t want to cover up our refinished dining table with a table cloth so I decided to include navy blue napkins instead.
Again, Amazon to the rescue and provided me with some really high quality navy linen napkins.
I also needed more of the purple advent color so I purchased some purple satin ribbon. I was once again blown away by the quality and price of this huge roll of purple ribbon from Amazon.
Now that I had all of my advent colors, plus the navy to ground everything. I needed to build a wreath around my advent candles.
Thankfully my garden is surrounded by some western red cedar hedges so I was able to snip a few branches off for free to build my centerpiece.
I also stopped at a local Christmas tree lot and asked if they had any clippings I could take for free. Doing that is such a good way to get free greenery this time of year.
I used it not only for this advent wreath, but also for garland along my mantle. Be sure to check my Instagram feed and stories to see more of my Christmas home over the next few days.
So with the pink table runner, purple satin ribbon, navy napkins, and greenery I had all my required advent colors plus some.
Detailed Christmas Tablescape Using Advent Colors
Now onto some of the special details I tried to include in this tablescape.
First, I love how these napkins turned out. Just an easy tie in the middle with purple ribbon, but they are so cute. They remind me of holiday bows.
Adding some gold ornaments on the napkins and throughout the centerpiece really brings in the Christmas spirit. I also thought adding the names of your guests to the ornaments with a paint pen or sharpie would be a great way to turn the place setting into the place card as well.
Or better yet, have your guests decorate their own ornaments for a little pre dinner activity.
I love the mix of greenery as it livens up the table and brings in a natural element.
Another way to add in some greenery would be to tie a sprig of rosemary through your purple ribbons on the napkins. Turns out I have several rosemary plants in my garden and didn’t realize it until now. So you’ll probably see me trying to figure out a way to incorporate more of that over the next few months.
And can we just talk about chargers for a second? So many people have no clue what they are or are afraid to use them.
Well mind stay on my table pretty much year round and let me tell you why. My kids are seriously messy eaters. One gets crumbs everywhere from constantly moving around in her seat. The other is still learning the right way for a spoon to enter his mouth.
All that to say, chargers catch so many of their spills and messes. It may be one more “plate” to wash but wiping one of those off over the sink is better than cleaning up spilled milk from the floor in my opinion.
We aren’t afraid to use them and you shouldn’t be either. In this house we will use them until people learn to sit still and put the spoon in your mouth long ways not horizontally while slurping the milk off and spilling half of it.
