It’s another episode of the Conversations with the Hostess podcast today and it’s a good one you guys!  If you are a military spouse, mom with military kids, or associated with the military lifestyle at all then you should listen in.

I’m talking with Daena Vandre and Abi Ray the founders of Legacy Magazine and Legacy Magazine Kids all about how their publications help those in the military community.

These women are serious community builders and supporters of the military families and I was honored to get to chat with them.  Read below for all the things we talked about including some great party and hosting advice.  Plus, download and play the latest podcast episode right here or on Apple podcasts and Spotify.

What I’m Bingeing

This week, I’m not binge-ing anything in the traditional sense.  Instead I took the time to honor and thank our veterans.  As a fellow veteran, I know how much sacrifice goes into the decision to join the military and move far away from family and friends.  It’s so important to make veterans that have done such a selfless act feel appreciated.

Please take time this week to thank a veteran!

And here’s a little picture of the day I was commissioned and started my military journey.  My how long ago it was, yet feels like yesterday!

What’s In The Episode

Like I said before this episode will leave you feeling so encouraged as a member of a military family.  It will help you know that you’re not alone in your struggles or celebrations.

Here’s a quick breakdown of our conversation, but I highly recommend you listen to the full episode!

  • Daena and Abi both offered great advice on the difference between those that tend to never move and stay close to home, and the those that are a part of a military lifestyle where you move constantly.
  • Something we can all take from that discussion is to be open to new relationships and not to waste the time you have somewhere but to embrace it.
  • If you are missing the place where you grew up or a place that feels like home, Daena shared so many great ideas of how to bring what feels like home to wherever the military takes you.
  • We had a long discussion on why it’s difficult to make mom friends, how to reconfigure what friendships look like, ending relationships when they don’t mesh, and making friends outside of your kids to meet your own needs.  I personally felt like I was in a much needed therapy session with this topic!
  • Being a military spouse can feel lonely at times, Daena has been there and shared how she creates more noise and less quiet.  Is that something you need in your life?
  • Abi had great advice on making the community that you want in your home if you can’t find your community.  So many good ideas on bringing others in and thinking about them in the process

Next we talked all about Legacy Magazine and Legacy Kids, two great publications for those in a military family.  So what’s the difference?

  • Legacy Magazine is for the adults in the military and their spouses.  It shares in depth, timeless articles addressing the challenges of the military community and how to navigate them.  It’s a bi-annual publication that has published so many contributing writers and artists.
  • Legacy Magazine Kids is for kids in a military family.  It gives those kids a voice and a place to connect with other kids like them.  Plus, it’s a fun magazine with articles, activities, and art that any young military kid will love.
